Kung Fu Cinema Review

The French did it again. About 5 years ago (2004), Banlieue 13 proved to the world that France can also make jaw-dropping action movies filled with spectacular martial fights. in Banlieue 13 Ultimatum, martial artist, free-runner and stuntman Cyril Raffaelli and his team of daredevils return for another extremely entertaining action fest. Lots of outstanding free-running, parkour and martial arts sequences. Cyril Raffaelli kicks ass big time. This time, he partners up with David Belle, who is none other than the founder of parkour - the art of moving. Excellent chemistry between the two.

There is a new, interesting secondary character in this film: a tattooed, ultra-sexy chick that use a blade attached to her pony tail as a weapon - seems like something out of an old Shaw Brothers movie, right? That chick is cool. Too bad she only has one fight scene here. I'd definitely be interested in seeing her character developed into a main protagonist in Banlieue 13 Part 3 The Prequel.

Overall, another stellar actioner from France. I like the first Banlieue 13 a little bit better, though.

Blood and Bone (2009) Michael Jai White kicks major ass

Movies like Blood and Bone are proof that if one wants some real martial arts action, one should not look to the likes of Ninja Assassin. I mean, come on, the hero of that flick is played by Rain who is a Korean Pop star, for Christ's sake. While Rain certainly has a good look and a great body, he is about as real a martial artist as I am Santa Claus. Michael Jai White, or MJW, now he is the real deal. The man looks fierce, is sculpted like a Greek statue and got some mad skills. If I was to compare him to a renowned martial artist, I'd say he is the Black Donnie Yen.

Blood and Bone's got some spectacular action sequences, exciting and very well staged. On close examination (frame-by-frame advancing) you'll see there is no full-contact hits. But that's OK, not everyone is as crazy as the Thai guys in a Tony Jaa movie. In particular, the end fight between MJW and a guy in a suit is a fantastic piece of expert choreography, infused with a small dose of great humor.

My only complaint is that none of the guys whose asses MJW kicks in Blood and Bone comes close to posing a serious threat to him. Personally I prefer seeing the hero gets bloodied a bit before he triumphs.

A little trivia:
Panna Rittikrai is Tony Jaa's Martial Arts master and also a Martial Arts and Stunt Choreographer.

A common trademark in many of Panna films is the use of full contact rather than pulling punches or the use of camera tricks in the fight scenes.

Back to MJW. Perhaps as an action fan you have heard of him by now, especially after his promising performance in Undisputed II where he and Scott Adkins wowed fans with their incredible duels. If Hollywood suits know what's good for them, they would make MJW an action superstar, like they did with Jason Statham.

I've got a fantasy: I would love to see Michael Jai White goes against Donnie Yen. And Scott Adkins vs Wu Jing, too, while we're at it. And how about Jet Li vs Tony Jaa?

Support the filmmakers and artist who make good movies and buy the DVD. It's worth it.

Bruce Lee

A fight is not won by one punch or kick. Either learn to endure or hire a bodyguard.

Simplicity is the key to brilliance.

Bruce Lee, man, enough said. He the ALPHA and OMEGA MAN. Martial artists come and go but no one has ever replaced Bruce Lee and I don't think anyone ever will. The Dragon is simply unique.

Here are all the Bruce Lee fight scenes from The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, Way of the Dragon, Enter the Dragon and Game of Death.

Sure, every fan out there must have at least one set of Bruce Lee movies, but it doesn't hurt to have those clips lying around on your hdd so any time you need a dose of adrenaline there is no need to insert the dvds and fast-forward to the good parts.

The Tournament (2009) Kelly hu vs Scott Adkins

[Many a man (myself included) would sell their soul to have their head situated right under Kelly Hu's ass. But Scott Adkins doesn't seem too happy about it. Some people are never satisfied.]

IMDB

The Tournament is, without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable action flicks this year. It's got nice production values, well choreographed action sequences, an exciting premise and, of course, the delectable Kelly Hu in a starring, kick-ass role, not to mention Robert Carlyle, Ving Rhames and Scott Adkins!!

Basically, the story goes like this: every seven years, the top assassins in the world gather to kick each other's ass. The last killer standing gets 10 mils in cash. This immediately reminded me of Mean Guns (1997), which has a similar plot line: 100 bad people are to eliminate one another. 3 survivors will share 10 millions cash. While Mean Guns was a shameful mess. The Tournament fares much better, helped in no small measure by a stellar cast. Kelly Hu, in particular, delivers a great performance as a beautiful and vulnerable yet very deadly assassin. I was very disappointed that Robert Carlyle's character is just an annoying alcoholic priest. He would no doubt have kicked ass as a killer.

Anyone, if you're in the mood for a brainless but extremely exciting and well done action movie, this is the perfect fix for you.

Ong bak 2 (2008)

IMDB

Ong Bak took the action scene by storm in 2003. I still remember the first time I saw it. I had to pick my jaw up from the floor afterward. Then those crazy Thai stepped it up a notch with Tom Yum Goong, which was a very bad movie with amazing action sequences. It also set the record for most broken bones in a movie.

And then, in the year 2008, Tony Jaa and his creative team wowed the entire world again with Ong Bak 2 (a very stupid title). Like I said, I haven't updated this blog for a long time but here is the clip, for those of you who have been living under a rock and so haven't yet watched this awesome movie.

Take the elaborate choreography from the best of Shaw Bro Kung fu flicks, add to it the ferociousness of Bruce Lee and the hard-hitting, fast and furious action from Donnie Yen's best works, and of course, a healthy dose of creativity from the Tony Jaa team, not to mention beautiful cinematography and perfect editing (as in: no MTV-style bullshit) and you got yourself an instant classic. The fights in Ong Bak 2 are simply jaw-dropping and out-of-this-world. I can't wait to see what awaits us in the sequel (what would it be called? Ong Bak 2: The Sequel?)

But enough said, I am no critic and I have run out of superlative adjectives so just go ahead and download the clip, then buy the dvd. It's totally worth it.

Note: this was cut from a Blu-Ray rip, the quality is excellent, thus the big size.
