IMDB

Early Chang Cheh and also one of his bests. The action is bit slow compared to later films but is very well handled. Excellent performance from the magnificent trio Fu Sheng, Chen Kuan Tai and Chi Kuan-Chun. All 3 are so good looking and charismatic it's a always a pleasure to watch them fight.

Chang Cheh uses red or monochrome camera filtering to emphasis on the tragic moments, mostly the death of a hero. He uses the same technique again in his later films.

Worth mentioning is Fu Sheng's death which is particularly nasty. Which reminds me of another (possibly) Chang Cheh film in which Ti Lung is cut in half!! Cheh sure knows how to deal out terrible deaths to his heroes.

I got you by the balls!! Hehehe!! Hahaha!!

Must...Break....Balls!!!GRRRR!!!!

IMDB

This is vintage martial arts epic right here. I saw this as a kid and it left a big impression on me, mostly because of all the balls-grabbing :)
Now that I am all grown up (and getting old), watching it again is a totally different pleasure, because now I can appreciate the excellent choreography. The story is also above average which is not easy to say for films of this genre. Amazing performances from a stellar cast, too.

Really, if you have the money, buy the remastered dvd, this is a must-have for anyone's collection.

Note that the Invincible armor technique as shown here is extremely similar to the one mastered by Carter Wong in Born Invincible, which is another of my all-time favorites. It has a really great villain.

Buy it from HKFlix.

From Kung Fu Cinema:

After the success of The Secret Rivals 1 and 2, director Ng See-yuen took Tino Wong and his two star superkickers, Hwang Jang-lee and John Liu, and cast them in Invincible Armour, a more ambitious effort. The film boasts more elaborate sets and costumes, a Ming-era historical backdrop, and the expert choreography of Corey Yuen Kwai.
...
The leg fighting is toned down just a little from his previous collaborations with Liu and Jang-lee, but See-yuen maintains the same level of quality in the action. Corey Yuen and Yuen Biao, who both appeared as extras and doubles in The Secret Rivals 2 take over as action directors while making a couple of appearances onscreen along with Yuen Clan members Yuen Shun-yi and Yuen Cheung-yan. Anyone who pays any attention to kung fu movie makers should know that this assemblage of talent represents an all-star crew who has each excelled on their own. Not surprisingly, their combined efforts create a spectacular kung fu movie, made all the better since there is more of a story to house the action.
...
A real highlight is seeing Jang-lee in white beard take on Phillip Ko in white beard. Both of these actors were often individually cast as white-haired villains and seeing them go at each other in the same movie is very nice. While not one of the more distinctive screen fighters, Tino Wong also delivers a strong performance. Special mention should go to Yuen Biao, not for his average character performances, but for his doubling which can be evidenced in the amount of excellent tumbling and flips seen throughout the film.

The most memorable aspect of Invincible Armour must be the multiple grabs for Jang-lee’s privates. No, there isn’t some sick and twisted perversity at work here. (Well, maybe in a humorous way.) Rather, it’s where his weak spot is. Yet he has the ability to draw his testicles in and it’s humorously shown by quickly inserting a reverse shot of two eggs flying up and out of reach of a hand. The penis actually plays a big part in internal kung fu lore. Jang-lee’s character has remained celibate throughout his life which supposedly keeps a martial artist from losing internal power and thus, his Iron Armor is “doubly strong.” Also, kung fu masters supposedly have the ability to reel in their privates, making the traditional weak spot for all men moot. This can be seen in Kill Bill: Vol. 2 when Uma Thurman kicks Gordon Liu as Pai Mei in the crotch to no effect. Yet, there’s always an effective countermove for everything in kung fu movies and Liu and Wong’s efforts to figure this all out makes the final fight in Invincible Armour quite entertaining.

Invincible Armour is an excellent kung fu classic and definitely recommended to even casual fans. Yet I still feel that most of the talent involved has done better work at one point or another, but not by much. Just having this all-star cast and crew involved is a kick. Rock solid kung fu action and the addition of familiar stock music and English-dubbed voices make this a reliable old schooler. It doesn’t push genre boundaries, but it’s always fun to watch.

Kung Fu Instructor (1979) Ti Lung, Feng Ku, Johnny Wang

Not widely known but excellent old-fashioned kung fu flick with a very charismatic Ti Lung (looking great with a beard) and some great fights.

The kung fu instructor himself is a charismatic and likeable character who the viewer really roots for. As well as those moments which allow the character to display his considerable fighting skills, Wong has some great scenes with Jir Jir, who has quite clearly taken a liking to him. One scene in particularly is amusing, in which she attempts to engage him in conversation, and he genuinely cannot understand her desire to talk about anything other than martial arts.
...
The action comes thick and fast, with some memorable fights, especially during the climax, when Ku Feng, whose skills are incredible despite his age, joins the fray. The choreography by Tang Chia (who also worked on the likes of “The Heroic Ones” and “The Sword of Swords”) is excellent and makes for exciting viewing, with some very well organised sequences in which Ti Lung takes on multiple opponents using the pole.

Although not particularly well known, “The Kung Fu Instructor” is very enjoyable and is a worthy addition to the collection of any Shaw Brothers fan, or indeed anyone who enjoys martial arts cinema.

Who am I? (1998) Jacki Chan, Ron Smoorenburg, Kwan Yeung

This is near the top of Jacki Chan's best fights. It's excellently done and extremely enjoyable.
A must-see for everyone, especially for casual kung fu films viewers.

The featured attraction is a generous rooftop duel between Chan and two young thugs played by Ron Smoorenburg and Kwan Yeung. Both provide Jackie with a good workout. Ron’s legwork is particularly impressive, although he doesn’t seem to quite match Jackie for speed or power. But anyone who has worked with Jackie probably knows that its easier said than done since only his experienced stunt team are really trained to match his screen fighting rhythm.

Gorgeous (1999) Jacki Chan vs Bradley James Allan

IMDB

This film isn't reviewed on Kung Fu Cinema, which astounded me because the fight between Jacki Chan and Bradley James Allan is a very good one. There is some great humor incorporated into the fight and it is nicely choreographed with some fast sparring and good leg-works, though the use of wire is sometimes too blatant and ineffective, thankfully it doesn't occur too often.
Another complaint is that Jacki Chan was doubled in some scenes, as you can see below. But that's understandable since he wasn't in top form anymore. Still it's sad to see that such a legendary stuntman now has to use stuntmen for himself.

Overall I find this to be an extremely enjoyable fight. It's good, it's funny and and completely violence-free. No hate, no desire to kill, this is only a competition to see who is the best fighter. Its good spirit makes for a nice change from all the violent fights we usually see in movies.

New Shaolin Boxers aka Grand Master of Death (1976) Alexander Fu Sheng, Johnny Wang Lung Wei

This is before Fu Sheng discovered his comedic 'talent' and started doing more comedy, less kung fu, which was a big loss for us all.
He really excelled in this film, demonstrating great skill and lots of energy. One of his best and also one of the best kung fu films ever. The Tsai Li Fu Fist is also something we rarely see so it's a novelty, too.

Buy dvd here.

After watching this film, audiences in the 1970's cannot have been in any doubt that Fu Sheng was a star. 'New Shaolin Boxers' was his first opportunity to carry a film on his own and he does it brilliantly. Here he delivers everything you would want from the leading man in a kung fu film - he's handsome, charismatic, endearingly naive and carries himself with enough cocky swagger to give him an 'edge'. He excels in the films many action sequences too, Fu really attacks the fights with conviction and energy. Choi Li Fut is the style of choice in the film, which Fu ably shows at the beginning with a demonstration of some of the forms along with a short history on the style. The Choi Li Fut is only really used at the end of the film after the obligatory training sequences. Chang Cheh adds something a little different to the final bout by intercutting the training scenes with the fight to show how the style is taken from practice to proper use. This technique works really well and manages to stay the cool side of gimmicky.

Iron Fisted Monk (1977) Sammo Hung, Chan Sing

From Kung Fu Cinema:

The fights are the main seller here. Sammo mixes it up with a number of excellent battles involving various weapons and kung fu techniques such as Fung Hak On’s excellent northern Mantis Fist and Chan Sing’s various southern boxing forms. Although the action doesn’t reach the technical brilliance of Warriors Two (1978) or The Prodigal Son (1982), the climatic and bloody final bout featuring both Sammo and Chan Sing must be seen by even casual fans.
...
Overall, Sammo hits the right notes in this film with uniformly terrific kung fu action. For his level of creativity and genius when it comes to action, the film also enjoys the distinction of being one of the best of its kind from the era and is certainly a landmark title. With Chan Sing in a memorable role that aptly features his rugged skills and a cast of familiar faces, many of whom would go on to stardom in the future, The Iron Fisted Monk deserves recognition as a true classic of the genre.
