The Best Movie Fight Scenes

Heroes of the East is, quite simply put, a quintessential example of martial arts movies. Not only does it deliver first-rate fight choreography, but it also takes a fresh approach to a cliché-ridden genre. Usually, in a martial arts flick, the reasons behind all the fighting and maiming and killing is one or sometimes all of the following: 1) vengeance 2) a quest to be the Numero Uno Arse-Kicker 3) fighting against oppression and/or injustice. Not the case with Heroes of the East, here the trouble begins with cultural clashes between a Chinese husband and a Japanese wife, both practitioners of martial arts. From there it develops into a fierce matching of skills that sees Gordon Liu pitted against an array of Japan's most accomplished fighters. The whole thing represented in a refreshingly sportive spirit. No duel to the death, no ball-crushing, neck-snapping, throat-tearing, eye-poking, head-bashing and gut-spilling either, and the fighters treat each other with mutual respect.

A must-have for any kung-fu flick aficionado.

Watching Huang jia shi jie aka Yes, Madam (1985) again yesterday after almost 20 years brought back a lot of childhood memories for me. I mean, I grew up watching beautiful battling babes like Michelle Yeoh, Cynthia Rothrock, Moon Lee, Cynthia Khan and Yukari Oshima. I love those 80's-90's H.K. actioners, not because they are generally good movies as a whole, but because the action is often fantastic. Yes, Madam is a good example of that. The final showdown where Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock team up against Dick Wei and his cohorts is a magnificent piece of ass-kicking mayhem. This sequence alone should be worth the price of the DVD purchase.

Bodyguards and Assassins was at the top of my can't-wait-to-see movies list. Every time I thought of about watching Donnie Yen pitted against Le Cung, my mouth watered. Well, I finally got to see that much-hyped scene today.

The parkour scene where Le Cung chases Donnie Yen through a crowded street is extremely spectacular and should make the Banlieu 13 team proud. But the confrontation between these two great ass-kickers, while excellent in and of itself, is a little disappointing. Perhaps it's just me, though, for I had too much expectations for this clash of the titans. Ultimately, it doesn't measure up to the standard set by the Donnie Yen vs Wu Jing (S.P.L) and Donnie Yen vs Collin Chu (Flash Point) fights. The not-so-good editing doesn't help either.

As can be expected, the ambush sequence is adrenaline-charged and well done, though I must say it is marred by too many melodramatic scenes that make it less exciting than it should have been.

The thing I love most about period movies is the weapon fights. Rapid-fire exchange of blows and the sound of metal on metal clash always gets my adrenaline pumping. I am happy to see Bodyguards and Assassins delivers some great sequences of martial arts weapons fighting.

Leon Lai is OK as a "kung-fu master" that fights with an iron fan but where the hell was Wu Jing when you needed him?

The copy I got didn't come with any English subtitle and I don't speak Chinese so I just watched the fight scenes. Wait for a review from Mark Pollard at kungfucinema.com.

Kung Fu Cinema Review

The French did it again. About 5 years ago (2004), Banlieue 13 proved to the world that France can also make jaw-dropping action movies filled with spectacular martial fights. in Banlieue 13 Ultimatum, martial artist, free-runner and stuntman Cyril Raffaelli and his team of daredevils return for another extremely entertaining action fest. Lots of outstanding free-running, parkour and martial arts sequences. Cyril Raffaelli kicks ass big time. This time, he partners up with David Belle, who is none other than the founder of parkour - the art of moving. Excellent chemistry between the two.

There is a new, interesting secondary character in this film: a tattooed, ultra-sexy chick that use a blade attached to her pony tail as a weapon - seems like something out of an old Shaw Brothers movie, right? That chick is cool. Too bad she only has one fight scene here. I'd definitely be interested in seeing her character developed into a main protagonist in Banlieue 13 Part 3 The Prequel.

Overall, another stellar actioner from France. I like the first Banlieue 13 a little bit better, though.

Movies like Blood and Bone are proof that if one wants some real martial arts action, one should not look to the likes of Ninja Assassin. I mean, come on, the hero of that flick is played by Rain who is a Korean Pop star, for Christ's sake. While Rain certainly has a good look and a great body, he is about as real a martial artist as I am Santa Claus. Michael Jai White, or MJW, now he is the real deal. The man looks fierce, is sculpted like a Greek statue and got some mad skills. If I was to compare him to a renowned martial artist, I'd say he is the Black Donnie Yen.

Blood and Bone's got some spectacular action sequences, exciting and very well staged. On close examination (frame-by-frame advancing) you'll see there is no full-contact hits. But that's OK, not everyone is as crazy as the Thai guys in a Tony Jaa movie. In particular, the end fight between MJW and a guy in a suit is a fantastic piece of expert choreography, infused with a small dose of great humor.

My only complaint is that none of the guys whose asses MJW kicks in Blood and Bone comes close to posing a serious threat to him. Personally I prefer seeing the hero gets bloodied a bit before he triumphs.

A little trivia:
Panna Rittikrai is Tony Jaa's Martial Arts master and also a Martial Arts and Stunt Choreographer.

A common trademark in many of Panna films is the use of full contact rather than pulling punches or the use of camera tricks in the fight scenes.

Back to MJW. Perhaps as an action fan you have heard of him by now, especially after his promising performance in Undisputed II where he and Scott Adkins wowed fans with their incredible duels. If Hollywood suits know what's good for them, they would make MJW an action superstar, like they did with Jason Statham.

I've got a fantasy: I would love to see Michael Jai White goes against Donnie Yen. And Scott Adkins vs Wu Jing, too, while we're at it. And how about Jet Li vs Tony Jaa?

Support the filmmakers and artist who make good movies and buy the DVD. It's worth it.
