Heroes of The East aka Shaolin Challenges Ninja (1979)

IMDB

Heroes of the East is, quite simply put, a quintessential example of martial arts movies. Not only does it deliver first-rate fight choreography, but it also takes a fresh approach to a cliché-ridden genre. Usually, in a martial arts flick, the reasons behind all the fighting and maiming and killing is one or sometimes all of the following: 1) vengeance 2) a quest to be the Numero Uno Arse-Kicker 3) fighting against oppression and/or injustice. Not the case with Heroes of the East, here the trouble begins with cultural clashes between a Chinese husband and a Japanese wife, both practitioners of martial arts. From there it develops into a fierce matching of skills that sees Gordon Liu pitted against an array of Japan's most accomplished fighters. The whole thing represented in a refreshingly sportive spirit. No duel to the death, no ball-crushing, neck-snapping, throat-tearing, eye-poking, head-bashing and gut-spilling either, and the fighters treat each other with mutual respect.

A must-have for any kung-fu flick aficionado.

IMDB

Gordon Liu plays Huang Fei Hung as directed by Lau Kar Leung. He will later reprise this role in Martial Club.

Best fights are:
Chen Kuan Tai vs Gordon Liu in the rain.
Lau Kar Leung vs his real life brother, Lau Kar Wing
Gordon Liu vs Lau Kar Leung

The training scenes are also pretty good but you have to buy the dvd if you want to see the entire movie :)

It's always a great joy to watch Lau Kar Leung (Liu Chia Liang) move. He always strikes with ferocious speed and deadly precision. He truly is an inimitable onscreen presence.

The force is strong with that one!!

Mark Pollard from Kungfucinema said:

"Lau himself is truly the master of real kung fu screen fighting and proves it in a magnificent duel with his favorite screen sparring partner Johnny Wang Lung-wei."

This is a rip from the remastered dvd by Dragon Dynasty. Thanks go to the original ripper/uploader on KG. You know who you are :)

Shaolin Mantis (1978) David Chiang, Lau Kar Wing, Norman Chu

Here is what Mark Pollard at Kungfucinema has to say about this film:

"All of the plentiful weapons combat in the film that leads up to the finale is excellent. David Chiang convincingly wields a spear, three-section staff and twin butterfly knives against his adversaries. His last bout with Norman Siu is the most memorable. Part of Norman’s deadly sword technique is to frequently perform rolls on the ground. Chiang comes up with a clever method of turning this maneuver against him. Leading lady Wong Hang-sau is not just a pretty face. She also performs some energetic kung fu sparring of her own and certainly offers up the film’s most colorful character.

The final match between Chiang and Lau’s brother Kar-wing is outstanding. Apart from Kar-wing’s pipe, it’s open hand all the way. The gist is that Kar-wing’s Shadowy Fist technique is used to ensnare or trap its victim in locking attacks. Chiang’s Mantis style, with its own locking moves and counters is the perfect foil. The engagement becomes a physical chess match of sorts with equally-equipped opponents trying to outmaneuver each other. Although most of the moves are with the arms, crucial legwork isn’t left out either. The only thing that’s missing is outrageous acrobatics and leaping, but that’s not what this type of hardcore kung fu action is about. This is Lau Kar-leung, the action director at his very best and kung fu buffs should definitely take note. The gruesome finishing move, seen only by the characters’ shadows on the wall is priceless. " (check out the last screenshot)

I feel compelled to add that this is arguably David Chiang's best performance in his entire career. He is not as skilled as Gordon Liu, has no physical presence like Leung Kar Yan, but still he can be pretty good when directed by someone like Liu Chia Liang.

Mad Monkey Kung fu (1979) Liu Chia Liang, Hsiao Hu, Lo Lieh

Yet another great classic of old-schooled kung fu. Here Hsiao Hu is at his most energetic, most kinetic. No one, and I dare say no one, can do mad monkey kung fu better than this guy. He was born to play this role!! It's too bad Lo Lieh proves no match for him. A better opponent for Hsiao Ho would be Liu Chia Liang himself.
If any martial arts movie is worth shelling out the dough for, this certainly is it.

Here you can see the the training sequence, which is awesome, and the final showdown where Liu Chia Liang takes on multiple bad guys then Hsiao Ho kicks Lo Lieh's ass, Mad Monkey Style!!

8 diagram pole fighter (1984) Gordon Liu

One of the genre's greatest classics, The 8 diagram pole fighter delivers extremely spectacular kung-fu. Here you can watch the entire finale. Be warned, don't watch it with your kids. Here we are shown another facet of those Shaolin monks: they can be pretty damned violent when fighting evil men. The gruesome teeth-breaking technique is amble proof of that!! Priceless stuff!!
