Bodyguards and Assassins (2009) Donnie Yen vs Le Cung

IMDB

Bodyguards and Assassins was at the top of my can't-wait-to-see movies list. Every time I thought of about watching Donnie Yen pitted against Le Cung, my mouth watered. Well, I finally got to see that much-hyped scene today.

The parkour scene where Le Cung chases Donnie Yen through a crowded street is extremely spectacular and should make the Banlieu 13 team proud. But the confrontation between these two great ass-kickers, while excellent in and of itself, is a little disappointing. Perhaps it's just me, though, for I had too much expectations for this clash of the titans. Ultimately, it doesn't measure up to the standard set by the Donnie Yen vs Wu Jing (S.P.L) and Donnie Yen vs Collin Chu (Flash Point) fights. The not-so-good editing doesn't help either.

As can be expected, the ambush sequence is adrenaline-charged and well done, though I must say it is marred by too many melodramatic scenes that make it less exciting than it should have been.

The thing I love most about period movies is the weapon fights. Rapid-fire exchange of blows and the sound of metal on metal clash always gets my adrenaline pumping. I am happy to see Bodyguards and Assassins delivers some great sequences of martial arts weapons fighting.

Leon Lai is OK as a "kung-fu master" that fights with an iron fan but where the hell was Wu Jing when you needed him?

The copy I got didn't come with any English subtitle and I don't speak Chinese so I just watched the fight scenes. Wait for a review from Mark Pollard at kungfucinema.com.

The In the line of duty series have always been consistently good in term of action. You should check them out.

Flash Point (2007) Donnie Yen vs Collin Chou

Donnie Yen has always been my favorite martial actor, ever since his early appearance in Drunken Tai Chi and Tiger Cage 2.

As an action director, I like him better than Yuen Woo Ping, for he always tries to re-invent himself and sticks to as much realism as he can, while Yuen seems to re-cycle the same moves nowadays.

As a martial actor, I like him better than Jet Li because of his physical presence, his intensity hand his rough power.

The final showdown in Flash point is the culminating point of everything Donnie Yen's skills and inventiveness have been building up from Legend of the wolf to the great S.P.L.

Well, I am no critic so I'll just quote Mark Pollard:

"In KILL ZONE, Yen dabbled with Mixed Martial Arts fighting for the first time against Sammo. Think of that as the teaser and his fight against Chou as the main event. MMA choreography in Hong Kong is rare but there have been numerous attempts by Hollywood to incorporate it. Thanks to its real-world popularity in the West, it’s become the new measure of gritty and realistic fighting skill. Once you add grappling and groundwork to a fight, there’s no going back. Those old school roundhouse kicks and crane stances work in the proper context but don’t work when someone knocks you off your feet, coils around you like a snake and tries to choke the life out of you. Action directors today who work on modern-day films can no longer ignore some form of MMA fighting and still consider themselves relevant. In this context, Yen is way ahead of the pack in the East and the West. Not only is he the first Hong Kong action director to fully embrace this fighting style but he has managed, in an eight minute sequence, to utterly destroy every other attempt to film anything even remotely related to MMA fighting. THE BOURNE IDENTITY, CRADLE 2 THE GRAVE and many recent low-budget films like BEYOND THE RING have been buried. Yen merges the high-impact choreography Hong Kong is already famous for with MMA fighting and produces some sparring that looks truly painful. You will see fists and kicks connect. Once again, Hong Kong does screen fighting better than anyone in the world."

For me personally, the fight between Donnie Yen and Collin Chou is arguably the GREATEST modern fight ever filmed onscreen.

The greatest working martial artist today isn't Jet Li, it's Donnie Yen. While I like Jet Li as much as the next kungfu lover, I have to admit watching his recent movies, especially Fearless, gives me an impression of deja-vu. It seems like we have seen all his moves before.
Donnie Yen, on the other hand, doesn't stop trying to invent and improve himself. From Legend of the Wolf to SPL to Flash Point, he has given us some of the most inventive fights ever filmed in the history of cinema.
When Yen goes against Wu Jing, it's retractable baton against knife in what is arguably the most brutal, colorful, exciting and spectacular one-on-one combat ever.
The use of color and lighting, the soundtrack and the rhythms of the fight work exceptionally well. You have never seen anything like this before and you probably won't see anything like it again for a very long time.
The final showdown between Yen and Sammo Hung is also very well done, where Donnie Yen incorporated for the first time(?) MMA into the traditional style of onscreen fighting. It was an absolute success.
2 years later, Donnie Yen went on and outdo himself yet again in Flash Point (2007) where MMA is used to even greater effect.

Legend of the wolf (1997) Donnie Yen

Donnie Yen is the best martial artist working right now. Yes, he is better than Jet Li. Here is a man who is constantly trying to improve and outdo himself, to bring something new to the kungfu genre.
His creativity is evidenced in Legend of the Wolf which he himself directed. The movie itself is nothing too original but it's the fights that show us just how talented and brilliant Donnie Yen can be as a martial actor and choreographer.
There is a scene where he goes against a monkey-style fighter, both parties move so fast their arms become a blur and only the rapid-fire impact sound gives us a clue as to what is happening.
